FAQ; Frequently Asked Question for TMS Brainwell✚
FAQ for TMS Brainwell✚
What to do after nTMS?
- Drink plenty of water immediately after your nTMS session to promote optimal blood flow to the brain.
- Maintain your usual eating routine, but prioritize healthy choices. Limit sugary, fried, and fatty foods as they can hinder brain function and contribute to inflammation.
- some individuals experience drowsiness, while others feel more energized. Rest or engage in calming activities as needed.
When to stop nTMS stimulation?
After 20 sessions without any improvement, it is recommended to stop and evaluate the cause. This could be due to excessive medication, medication interactions, or severe conditions that are not responsive to nTMS.
In general, the brain and body need about 4-6 weeks to adjust. Therefore, after 20 sessions and a 1-month observation period, most patients will experience improvement.
How many nTMS sessions are needed?
On average, 20-100 sessions are needed. The more sessions you have, the better the results. The number of sessions depends on the following factors:
- Type of disease: Different diseases respond differently to nTMS. For example, pseudo-autism responds faster than other types of autism. The severity of the disease also affects the number of sessions needed. Less severe cases respond faster.
- Accuracy of treatment: If the stimulation is accurate and targeted, and the correct protocol is used, the results will be faster.
- Home training: Home training, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy, is “necessary” and should always be done in conjunction with nTMS. The more often you practice, the faster you will improve.
- Sleep and oxygen: Getting enough sleep and having no enlarged tonsils or adenoids will allow oxygen to reach the brain fully.
- Nutrition: Eating too much sugar, soda, sweets, cakes, cheese, salty foods, fried foods, and pickled foods can slow down brain function and delay development.
- Parenting: Stop playing with mobile phones, tablets, and TV. Understand your child’s real development, not the expectations of adults. Many children are not suitable for learning 2 languages. It is better to teach them one language at a time.
- Age of the child: The younger the child, the more the brain can develop and grow. This makes the results better in the long run. If the child is older or an adult, the brain will develop less than when they were younger, but it can still develop.
In general, autistic children:
10 sessions: Start to see results, such as more eye contact, easier to turn when called, more interested in learning about the surroundings.
20 sessions: See clear results, such as being able to take care of themselves, eat, drink, take off clothes, and start to make simple sounds.
30 sessions: See very clear results, such as being able to follow simple commands, make multiple sounds, and play with others.
40 sessions: Very different from before, such as being able to speak meaningfully and socialize better.
Some cases after 100 sessions (2 years continuously): Development is close to that of normal children.
Will development worsen if there is no stimulation for several weeks?
“It will not worsen”, but development may be slower than during the period of regular nTMS stimulation. This is because the brain cells that have already been connected will continue to be connected, similar to how riding a bicycle. Once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you will never forget it. However, if you do not ride it for a long time, you may not be as smooth as before.
What is the age range for TMS therapy?
- TMS therapy can be used for people aged 1 to 94. We are one of the pioneers in developing the nTMS technique in collaboration with European institutes, which is why we can offer it to such a wide age range.
- The earlier nTMS is applied, the better the long-term results will be, as the brain and nervous system are still developing.
- Many cases that have been treated with TMS in their 20s have still seen significant improvements compared to those who have not received treatment.
What is TMS?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, which is a method of stimulating the brain with magnetic waves.
It works by using the principle of electromagnetic induction. When an electric current is passed through the stimulation coil, it generates a magnetic field that is transmitted to the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles.
Magnetic wave stimulation is most effective when used in conjunction with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and exercise.
There are many different techniques for TMS stimulation. In clinical settings, the most common technique is nTMS (network Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), which is a network-based brain stimulation technique. nTMS is more comprehensive, safer, and more effective than traditional stimulation techniques.
How to prepare for nTMS?
- Get enough sleep.
- Eat breakfast and drink plenty of water. Brain stimulation requires a lot of energy, and drinking water will help ensure that your brain gets enough blood flow.
- Do not eat a heavy meal within 1 hour of the procedure. This can cause your child to vomit.
- Reduce your intake of sweets, fatty foods, and fried foods.
- Be on time. Arriving late will shorten the time available for your child’s treatment and may affect other patients, who mostly come from out of town.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, please bring a small towel with you. If your child cries, the clinic will use the towel to cover their mouth to prevent the spread of germs and to avoid disturbing the neighbors.
How is it done? Does it hurt?
“It doesn’t hurt.” We will place the stimulation coil on the head, mouth, neck, or torso where the problem is. There will be a slight clicking sound during stimulation.
Parents can try stimulating their own head or torso to understand the feeling.
It is normal for children who have never been stimulated before to cry for the first 1-5 times. They can be hugged or wrapped in a blanket to make the recovery process smoother. To keep the child’s attention, they will only be allowed to play with their mobile phone during nTMS.
During stimulation, the face and mouth may twitch. This is normal because the superficial nerves are also stimulated. However, our goal is to stimulate deep into the brain.
"My child's face twitched during nTMS. Is something wrong?"
The symptom described is not actually facial paralysis, but rather “facial twitching”. This is because the magnetic waves used in nTMS pass through the brain to stimulate it, but they also pass through the peripheral nerves on the scalp. This can cause the face to twitch in time with the stimulation.
What cases should not be treated with TMS?
- Patients with metal in their brain, such as bullets or shunts that are not MRI-compatible.
- Patients with uncontrolled epilepsy. If the patient is still experiencing seizures, TMS can be used to stimulate the torso and limbs, but brain stimulation should only be performed after the seizures have been controlled for at least 3 months.
- Children with high fever, chills, or severe discomfort leading to lethargy.
How often should do nTMS?
- Weekly treatment:
- Come in for 1-2 sessions per week, either on alternate days or 2-3 days in a row, depending on your convenience.
- We will adjust the nTMS technique to suit each individual child.
- Intensive treatment:
- If you live far away and it is inconvenient to travel back and forth, we recommend staying in Pattaya for 4-5 days to receive nTMS treatment consecutively.
- Can do 2 sessions per day, morning and evening, with at least a 3-hour interval. Don’t worry about it being too much, as we will adjust the stimulation method to suit 2 sessions per day.
- If you can stay for 5 days, you will be able to do 10 sessions. After that, you will gradually see changes within 1 month.
- The more often you stimulate, the faster you will see results.
How will development improve?
Most children will develop in the following order:
- Better vision: They will look at you and their surroundings more. They will see things more accurately.
- Better hearing: They will turn to look at sounds. They will hear sounds more like we do.
- Better taste: They will eat a wider variety of foods.
- More interest in the environment: Because their senses are better, they will be more interested in the world around them.
- Self-care: They will be able to eat, dress, and bathe themselves with some training.
- Socialization: They will be able to play with toys and interact with others.
- Better hand-eye coordination: They will be able to draw, write, and color.
- Increased vocalization: They will start to make more sounds and their sounds will become more varied. Speech therapy can help them progress even faster.
- Increased imitation: They will start to imitate words and phrases. The more they practice, the better they will become at speaking.
- Teachers, speech therapists, and developmental therapists who work with children with nTMS will notice significant improvements in their development during the stimulation period.
- Increased cunning: They will be able to plan and execute complex tasks to get what they want.
- Many children will be able to cook for themselves, which is a significant developmental milestone. Parents should encourage their children to challenge themselves.
There is also scientific evidence to support the benefits of nTMS. For example, children with autism who are treated with nTMS will have lower scores on the Thai-ATEC assessment, which indicates a decrease in their symptoms.
Does TMS have side effects and is it dangerous?
Possible side effects that always occur:
- Increased appetite
- Thirst
- Drowsiness after treatment
- Conversely, some people may feel more energetic, have a better mood, laugh more, and become more stubborn.
Possible side effects:
- Seizures during treatment. These are temporary seizures that do not last more than 5 minutes. After resting, the patient will feel better and there will be no effect on development. The chance of this happening is 1 in 60,000. In the doctor’s 8 years of experience, he has never seen a seizure, but it is still possible. If you cannot accept this risk, you should not do it yet.
Being well-prepared can help reduce the risk of problems.
Stimulation to the chest or heart is not dangerous and does not affect the heart. We may see the hand twitching because there is a nerve branch in the middle of the chest that goes to the arm.
How long does the stimulation last?
- If only the head is stimulated, the treatment takes 15 minutes.
- If the arms and legs are also stimulated, the treatment takes 30 minutes.
TMS treatment is effective for the following conditions:
US FDA-approved conditions:
- Major depressive disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Migraine
- Autism, Developmental delays, Speech delays, Learning disabilities, Reading and writing problems, Calculation problems, Poor memory, Muscle weakness, Brain atrophy, Cerebral palsy
- Stress, Insomnia, Anxiety, Gaming addiction, Mobile phone addiction
- Cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease
- Numbness in hands and feet, Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Hemiplegia, Paralysis, Spinal cord injury
How does TMS Brainwell ✚ differ from others?

1- Each TMS device is significantly different. TMS is a technology where different brands and coils produce varying results. It’s like a surgical knife; in the hands of an inexperienced person, it could cause harm, but in the hands of an expert, it can yield excellent results. What sets us apart is…
2- Brainwell Medical has tested various TMS brands available in Thailand. We’ve chosen a Danish TMS device with 30 years of research and development. It uses a specialized coil that is at least 20 times more effective than butterfly or figure-eight coils. Our coil can target specific areas for stimulation, reducing side effects compared to traditional helmet-style coils (dTMS, H-coil).
3- Brainwell Medical was the first in Asia to initiate brain stimulation research in children (since 2012). With over a decade of experience and more than 10,000 treatments annually, we are a leading lecturer and trainer in pediatric TMS. Our unique Network TMS™ technique, co-developed with the European Union and refined into the Brainwell Algorithm, is specifically designed for children with special needs.
4-We conduct brain scans (qEEG, LORETA, +/- MRI, MRA) before and after treatment, analyzed by a PhD in neurophysiology from Mahidol University. The results are presented in clear graphs, free from bias. Our current data shows that with consistent use of the Brainwell Algorithm for a year (50-100 sessions), brain stimulation can accelerate development by an average of at least 3,000% compared to children receiving standard treatments (medication, therapy, etc.).
5- However, individual responses can vary greatly, from excellent to minimal or no improvement. This depends on at least 30 factors, including parenting, training, scientific understanding, medication, and diet. If you are interested in an evaluation, please contact
