“I want my child to be calm, doctor.”

“I want my child to be calm, doctor.”

Doctors get this question more than 70% of the time. Here is a simple and short explanation:

  1. Almost all normal children have to go through a naughty phase before their brains develop the ability to socialize and understand social punishment. Only then will they be able to calm down.
  2. However, there are also many children who are genuinely hyperactive and have problems with daily life and social interaction. In these cases, medication may be appropriate, but it should be evaluated by a medical professional first.***
  3. There are two types of TMS stimulation: excitatory and inhibitory.

– Excitatory stimulation is used for children with autism who are slow to learn. It helps the brain to coordinate and function better, leading to improvements in intelligence, social skills, and self-control. Many people who have received this treatment are able to sit still and wait for longer periods of time.

– Inhibitory stimulation makes the brain more inactive and calm. It should only be used when absolutely necessary, as doctors do not prefer it. Some research studies have used this method.

  1. A mother took her very hyperactive son to a child psychiatrist. The mother thought her son needed medication to calm him down. Doctor evaluated the boy and told the mother,

“I can give him medication, but would you rather have him sit still and drool, or be active and intelligent like this?”  The mother was stunned and took her son home. Two years later, her son was able to calm down on his own.

  1. The brains of autistic children or children with brain problems may process sight and sound differently than normal brains. This can cause them to be restless, scream, and unable to focus. TMS can help improve their sight, hearing, and touch. This allows them to experience the world in a new way. As a result, they may be excited and amazed by their new world at first.
  2. The purpose of stillness is to “practice and learn.”

So from my personal experience, doctors don’t like children who are quiet and withdrawn, but they prefer children who are mischievous but intelligent. This is because their brains are developing to their full potential, as they should be for a normal child.
